Short stop in: New York

Whether you’re here to work, rest or play, the chances are you’ll never feel you have enough time in New York anyway. If you have a short stopover though, here’s how to make the most of it.

Workout

New York and running go together like bagels and cream cheese, so you should really try to squeeze in a run on the day’s agenda. The city has many scenic running paths, the Central Park Reservoir Loop being the most famous. At just over 3km, it’s a quick run and suitable for everyone. If you want a more challenging workout, choose the full loop through Central Park.

Breakfast

If you have time for a proper breakfast before work calls, you’re definitely in luck. Manhattan caters to every imaginable taste and budget. One great option is Atla, a new foodie favorite and one of The New York Times’ top restaurants for 2017. The breakfast menu, served until 4pm, is all about Mexican cuisine.

Lunch

Book a table at Flora Bar in the Met Breuer, the new extension of the Metropolitan Museum. Dedicated to contemporary and modern art, it’s suitably housed in an impressive, brutalist landmark from 1966.

Business hours

Many of New York’s hotel lobbies are great to work in and generally welcoming for business travelers and freelancers alike. As a bonus, you get to soak up the city’s buzzing atmosphere. If you need a nice space for a meeting, Ace Hotel in midtown Manhattan is a good option. It has an inviting communal work space with WiFi for all.

Evening

With only one evening at your disposal, it may be hard to whizz around the city from store to store. Focus on Soho, where the stores are conveniently gathered around a handful of streets. Even for veteran travelers to New York, there’s always something new.

Jam & dinner

New York is considered by many to be the jazz capital of the world, and has the live music scene to prove it. With icons like Birdland and Blue Note still going strong, there’s an abundance of high-quality venues to choose from. One of the most vibrant is The Lincoln Center’s jazz arm Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, where the biggest names in jazz perform regularly.
